Save Your Back With These Snow Shoveling Techniques

January is the coldest month of the year here in Ottawa, which means we are still dealing with tons of snow. If you are getting ready to head outside for another snow-clearing session, make sure you use the right snow shoveling techniques to help you avoid low back pain. You can always schedule an appointment with one of our Ottawa chiropractors at Merivale Chiropractic and Massage Clinic if you are suffering from back pain, but these snow shoveling tips can come in handy.

Warm Your Body Up

Shoveling snow is a strenuous activity, so it’s important to stretch and warm your body up like you would before doing any other type of exercise. Practice stretches that will loosen your back and leg muscles, so your body is ready for the physical demands of shoveling snow.

Dress Appropriately

One of the most important steps for preventing low back pain when shoveling snow occurs before you even walk outside. Wear layers, gloves, and a hat to keep warm while you’re in the snow. Choose waterproof boots that have good treads to help keep you stable when walking and standing on slippery surfaces.

Place Your Hands Properly

Start by placing one hand firmly on the shovel handle. Place your other hand on the shaft of the shovel, around 12 inches away from the handle. This will let you keep your back straight and maintain proper balance between the two sides of your body.

Hold the Shovel Closely

You will want to keep the shovel close to your body as you lift and move snow. This will help you avoid excessive arm movements that can cause pain in the back, arms, and shoulders.

Keep Your Back Straight

Focus on keeping your back straight while you are shoveling. You can do this by pushing your chest out and leading with your hips. Bend your knees and then use your leg muscles when lifting the snow.
